SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Seton Shrine exists to promote the life and legacy of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton as a source of inspiration and encouragement for all people. The Interpreter supports this mission by delivering first and third-person historical interpretation for Seton Shrine visitors. The Interpreter functions as part of a team that provides hospitality to Seton Shrine visitors.


RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Provide historical interpretation of the historic homes and grounds at the Seton Shrine

  • Perform guided tours of the historic homes according to an established tour schedule and as requested.
  • Commit tour module(s) to memory and develop engaging manner of delivery, adapting to the visitors on each tour as necessary to help them connect with the history.
  • Collaborate with appropriate staff to develop, prepare, and perfect a first-person portrayal of an assigned historic person that is historically accurate and relevant to visitors.
  • Deliver first-person interpretation as scheduled, interacting with other interpreters to enrich the visitor experience.
  • Augment personal knowledge by regular study during down time. Enhance interpretation with stories, anecdotes, analogies, etc. to engage visitors more effectively.

Mentor Junior History Interpreters (JHI's)

  • Develop positive relationships with each JHI assigned. Learn how to best encourage and challenge them. Ensure they know they are cared for.
  • Communicate with Education Programs Coordinator to develop learning objectives for each assigned JHI. Help JHI's make regular progress towards those objectives, leveraging the wisdom and help of other Shrine staff as may be helpful.
  • Supervise JHI's during shifts, ensuring they are prepared for visitors and are using their time well when not interpreting.

Contribute to the efforts of the Programs Department.

  • Assist with preparation for seasonal and special events
  • Lead portions of large visiting groups through elements of the Shrine besides the historic homes and grounds: basilica, museum, gift shop, and special exhibits.
  • Help visitors; answer questions or address concerns as requested.
  • Monitor the safety and condition of historic homes and grounds; report any concerns promptly.

Perform other related duties as assigned



ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Can memorize up to 1000 words of content and repeat it faithfully
  • A warm, engaging personality with and inviting presence that puts people at ease
  • Punctual, arriving on time, and reliable in attendance.
  • Ability to sustain peaceful, professional demeanor in stressful situations and with a variety of personalities.
  • Annual CPR/AED/First Aid training required (provided).
  • Safe environment training required (provided).

DESIRED SKILLS and/or KNOWLEDGE

  • Familiarity with the teaching and popular devotions of the Catholic Church preferred.
  • Computer experience, including common internet browsers Microsoft Teams and Outlook preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Experience with historic interpretation or formal speaking/presentation preferred.
  • Experience working with/teaching children and youth preferred.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Physically able to sit, stand, or walk for periods of 90+ minutes.
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Strong speaking voice required
