Seasonal Farmhand

Seton Harvest, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program sponsored by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent DePaul is seeking a part-time, benefit eligible, Seasonal Farmhand.

This Seasonal Farmhand will assist in the general operations of Seton Harvest. This farming project will grow a diverse range of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers. These crops will be distributed to CSA shareholder who come to the farm once a week to pick up their share of the harvest. The Farmhand will participate in all aspects of field management and the preparation of crops for market.

The Seasonal Farmhand will work 8-hour days, 3 days per week.

Department: Seton Harvest

Reports To: Seton Harvest Farm Manager

Education: High school graduate or the equivalent required.

Experience: Experience growing a wide variety of vegetable crops in either a garden or farm setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Must possess an understanding of or willingness to learn organic farming practices, including soil amendment processes, composting, weed management, harvesting methods, irrigation techniques and greenhouse operations.
2. Must be able to endure at least eight hours continuous work requiring physical demands, including, but not limited to standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, stretching, pushing, pulling and lifting.
3. Must be able to work outdoors at least 90% of an eight-hour work day, as weather permits.
4. Must know h ow to safely operate and care for agricultural equipment.
5. Must demonstrate positive attitude, creative thinking and self-motivational skills.
6. Must be able to effectively communicate with a broad range of individuals, including

the general public.

1. All job duties are expected to be completed in accordance with the mission and values of

the Daughters of Charity.

Essential Functions:

1. Communicates with prospective shareholders and returning shareholders with a polite customer service-oriented approach where the customer always comes first.
2. Assist in activities that increase soil fertility such as applying non-synthetic fertilizers, cover cropping, composting, mulching and other amendment processes.
3. Assists in greenhouse operations primarily for plant propagation purposes.
4. Assists in the planting, cultivating, mulching, weeding (mechanically and by hand),

irrigation, trellising, harvesting, cleaning and distribution of all produce.

1. Assists in the distribution days which will require an adjusted eight-hour work schedule.
2. Assists in maintaining overall cleanliness of crop fields, pole barn and greenhouse.
3. Assists in maintaining all tools and equipment.
4. Operates tractors, tillage equipment, mowers, cultivators, sprayers, seeders, flame weeders and other agricultural equipment as required.
5. Performs minor maintenance on the Seton Harvest pole barn and greenhouses.
6. Prepares for end-of-season by sowing cover crops, mulching and providing general clean-up.
7. Assists in the coordination of volunteer activities.
8. Adheres to strict safety practices and is constantly conscious of unsafe or potentially unsafe working conditions and makes every effort to correct or report hazards to the proper authority.
9. May be called upon to assist other personnel with special projects.
10. Plans and implements a personal development program utilizing internal and external resources to assure continuing professional growth.

Environmental Conditions:

• Subject to outside environment
• Hard labor in high temperatures of 80-90 degrees
• Hard labor in low temperatures of 15-40 degrees or in high temperatures of 80-90 degrees
• Exposure to potentially toxic/poisonous substances
• Frequent loud equipment and machine noise
• Occasional work beyond normal hours
