POSITION SUMMARY:

The Supervisor, Accounting and Reporting is a key leadership role within the Finance Department, responsible for overseeing the full-cycle accounts payable function, managing assigned financial reporting and accounting activities, and ensuring compliance with GAAP and organizational policies. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining fiscal integrity for the Province and supporting the financial operations of sponsored works (subsidiary ministries/entities).


Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this role supervises the Accounts Payable Processor in support of a complete, systemic, and computerized record of all accounts payable, accounting operations and strategic financial oversight. The Supervisor will mentor staff, support the annual budget and audit processes, and collaborate cross-functionally to ensure timely, accurate, and meaningful financial reporting that supports decision-making.


The Supervisor Accounting and Reporting must possess strong analytical and communication skills and demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively with others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Accounts Payable Oversight

  • Supervise the Accounts Payable Processor, ensuring accurate coding, timely processing, and proper authorization of invoices, check requests, and expense reimbursements.
  • Provide support in the absence of the Accounts Payable Processor.
  • Review monthly A/P reconciliations and aging reports to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain organized and secure A/P records, in both electronic and paper formats, in compliance with record retention policies and audit standards.
  • Prepare appropriate financial statement analyses and other financial information to assist with an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year end close.
  • Monitor and improve internal controls related to accounts payable and disbursements.

2. Financial Accounting and Reporting

  • Respond to inquiries from the Accounting Manager and other finance and Provincial Managers regarding financial results and special reporting requests.
  • Prepare financial statements, variance analyses, and management reports on a monthly and quarterly basis.
  • Collaborate with leadership to develop the annual operating and capital budgets for the Province, including leading the budget process for capital repairs and maintenance, local mission houses and various other operating areas.
  • Maintain and reconcile the fixed asset sub-ledger reconciling it to the general ledger on a monthly basis; ensure appropriate capitalization and depreciation policies are followed.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations (for nonprofit entities), and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the preparation and coordination of annual external audits for the Province and sponsored work, including support for audit schedules, confirmations, and documentation requests.

3. For the Sponsored Work(s):

  • Lead the budgeting and planning activities, oversee day-to-day accounting activities and monthly close, ensuring accurate and timely journal entries, reconciliations, and reporting.
  • Prepare financial statement analyses and other financial information to assist with preparation of quarterly management and Board of Directors reports.

4. Provide guidance, training, and performance feedback to direct reports; foster a collaborative and professional team culture. Establish clear performance goals and development plans aligned with department objectives. Encourage continuous learning and innovation in accounting practices and systems.5.

5. Collaborate with the Accounting Manager and Controller to support overall department goals and objectives.

6. Support Accounting Manager and Controller with special projects, financial analysis and process improvements.


OTHER ACCOUNTABILITIES:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Hybrid Office Environment

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance preferred. Five or more years of relevant experience in financial accounting and reporting with a minimum of 3 years of supervisory or team leadership experience, ideally in accounts payable or general accounting. Experience working in a not-for-profit is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The position requires extensive knowledge of financial accounting and reporting and a thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (nonprofit). All candidates must be PC proficient with strong experience in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis). Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, strong written and verbal communication; able to present financial data clearly and confidently; high level of integrity, discretion and commitment to accuracy; ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines and prioritize tasks effectively; and provide customer service are all necessary for this position. Experience with Blackbaud's Financial Edge general ledger is preferred.
